The Integra is a fairly bland looking small coupe, but anyone who mistakes it for just another Honda is in for a very rude awakening when the Type-R's demented VTEC variable valve timing gets to work at around 6,000rpm to deliver 187bhp from the 1.8-litre engine up front.
The motor is a rev junky and is only truly happy when closing in on its 8,000rpm-plus red line and snapping into the next gear to repeat the process. If it sounds like fun, that's because it is.
Add in the Integra's brilliant front-wheel drive chassis, superb steering and handling that defies belief and you have a car that will embarrass many more expensive and exotic cars.
The pay-off for the Integra's genius is a ride that will dislodge your fillings and so much noise from the road and engine, you'll think your ears will implode. That's what happens when Honda doesn't bother to fit any sound deadening to keep the weight down. And there was no standard radio to counter the din.
As an everyday car, the Integra is a nightmare. As a weekend toy it's an absolute joy. A loyal fan base has kept used prices strong and there's little to worry about when buying, other than looking for signs of too much track abuse. Most Integras are white, but later cars came in black or red.

If youve ever watched the British Touring Car Championship on television and thought it looked like fun, a used Honda Integra Type-R is the closest road going approximation to a proper touring car. Although Integras only campaigned in the less prestigious Class B, much of the important stuff under the skin has a lot of similarities with the mechanicals used in the companys racing Accords. Just be prepared for some racing car-like compromises. Therefore, youd expect a used Integra Type-R to be noisy, frenetic and incredible fun on the road and there are no disappointments on this score.
Still reckoned to be the finest handling front-wheel drive car ever built, the Type-R has come to symbolise the screaming performance of Hondas VTEC valve technology. The Integra Type-R is like the first BMW M3, Nissan Skyline GT-R32 and Peugeot 306 Rallye; whilst not being the most beautiful cars around, they nonetheless receive nods of respect from those who know about serious performance.
